Caregiving for a loved one is complex, challenging, and ongoing. Stress can be less when family members take the time to discuss assumptions and expectations early on and revisit this periodically since caregiving is a dynamic situation. Various issues needing attention range from finding help and resources, family planning, financials, deciding roles each family member takes on to lessen the possibility of resentment, and most importantly, ongoing support and respite relief for the primary caregiver who balances his or her own life as well as the patient’s. It can be physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually taxing. To maintain caregiver resilience and a healthy attitude it is important to have a team of support. When families are unable to have open honest conversation they might benefit from a facilitator to keep them on track.
